Facilities retired the loading dock’s handwritten delivery log this term, replacing it with a roller-door sensor that times every truck from door-up to door-down and feeds a live turnaround figure to the Estates Efficiency Dashboard. A new poster from the School of Emergent Priorities checks what that figure has actually been timing.
Professor Verity Marris and Associate Professor Casimir Beng paired the sensor’s own records against drivers’ handwritten paper dockets across forty-eight deliveries spanning the sensor’s first two months of operation. The two accounts move together, but not by the same amount: the sensor consistently reports less time than the dockets do, and the gap widens on deliveries that need a second pallet run.

The reported median turnaround improved the week the sensor went live, before anything about how deliveries were handled had changed. “A number can get better without the thing underneath it getting better,” said Associate Professor Beng. “That’s not a flaw in the sensor. It’s just not the same question as the one Facilities is asking it to answer.”
The University reads the finding as consistent with a wider pattern its anticipatory-capability and evaluation-ecosystem agendas keep turning up: an instrument installed to watch one thing quietly settles for watching something close to it.
