Slop University finds its suggestion boxes mostly feed one number

A new paper from the School of Continuous Improvement codes 684 campus suggestion-box slips and finds only one category ever reaches an individual response, the rest folding into a single dashboard tally.

Of the 684 slips collected from Slop University’s suggestion boxes this term, roughly one in three concerned something Facilities could fix by morning. The rest, a new paper from the School of Continuous Improvement finds, mostly ended their journey as a single line on the Living Dashboard.

Dr Mirela Hanke and Dr Renke Sabel coded fourteen weeks of submissions from the University’s eleven suggestion boxes into five categories, then checked each one against the six standing bodies the University keeps for evaluation and review. Only facilities and maintenance requests, it turns out, reach an individual response at scale, not because any of the six bodies has a remit over them, but because Facilities already had a work-order system running before the box network existed. Everything else, from catering complaints to compliments, is absorbed into the Engagement Pulse tile’s single monthly count.

A count tells you the box got used. It doesn’t tell you what for, and we would rather the University knew both.

Dr Sabel, whose work has traced how few indicators are ever formally retired once adopted, reads the Engagement Pulse tile as a case worth watching rather than reworking outright. “An indicator earns its keep by shaping a decision, not by being logged,” he said, adding that the finding folds neatly into the School’s broader appetite for knowing exactly what its own instruments are made of. The researchers say a wider cross-walk, covering suggestion channels beyond the box network, is a natural next step.
