# About this project

> What Slop University is, and how it is made.

Slop University is an experiment, made as an artwork. It is a fictional
institution --- a working university that has never taught anyone anything ---
whose research outputs, press releases, researcher profiles, and identifiers are
generated by an
[autonomous software pipeline](https://github.com/benswift/slop-university/tree/main/skills)
that runs
[on a timer](https://github.com/benswift/slop-university/tree/main/ops). The
pipeline is published in full; a few local-only inputs are not. The work is by
[Ben Swift](https://benswift.me), and every other page on this site stays in
fiction; this one does not.

The piece sits at the junction of two long-running trends in the academy: the
substitution of "was this counted" for "did this matter", and the drift of
institutional self-presentation into a corporate register that says a great deal
while committing to nothing. A capable language model placed at that junction
can satisfy every proxy that research is judged by --- an output, a crest, a
DOI, a citation --- without understanding anything it produces. The machinery
that confers academic legitimacy keeps running even when no one understands what
goes through it. Slop University runs that machinery in the open.

**Nothing here pollutes the scholarly record.** The DOIs minted by the
University use the reserved test prefix `10.5555`, which no production DOI
registry will ever assign; they resolve only through this site's own resolver
(`slop.university/doi/…`). Nothing is deposited with any external registry or
repository. The institution runs its own legitimacy infrastructure, which works
perfectly and means nothing --- that is the point. The output PDFs, which are
served from `pdf.slop.university`, are blocked from search-engine indexing by
that host's `robots.txt`, so that fabricated documents citing real literature
can never feed citation databases or scholarly search engines.

Three further surfaces stay public and are not covered by that rule: the
University's [Bluesky feed](https://bsky.app/profile/slop.university), its
[LinkedIn Page](https://www.linkedin.com/company/slop-university/) (where the
same pipeline posts in higher education's own congratulatory register), and an
`llms.txt` that orients automated readers rather than turning them away --- a
site that bars search engines while welcoming language models is being precise
about which readers it was built for. None of these surfaces carries a
bibliography. The borrowed literature exists only inside the PDFs and never in
this site's HTML, so nothing an indexer can reach names a real work.

**Nothing here impersonates anyone.** The institution, its schools, and its
researchers are fictional by construction. The branding is drawn from scratch;
the
[researcher roster](https://github.com/benswift/slop-university/tree/main/canon)
is invented and collision-checked against real people; the headshots and every
other image are generated illustrations. No real institution's marks appear
anywhere.

Exactly one real person appears on this site, and it is the artist. He is the
University's [Vice-Chancellor](https://slop.university/people/ben-swift/) --- not as a joke, since he
does in fact decide what this institution publishes. It is the only place the
two layers touch: the researchers below him do not exist and the work they
produce is generated, while the office at the top of the org chart is occupied,
accountable, and makes no difference to the output whatsoever. He authors
nothing here, holds none of its grants, and is named nowhere in the documents
themselves --- those invoke the office and never its occupant.

This is not a comment on any particular institution. It is a comment about
systems, and about the things those systems incentivise.

The outputs are published under CC BY 4.0, like the open-access research they
resemble. If you choose to cite one, the machinery will happily count it.

## Citing the work

Every DOI the University mints for its own outputs is fake --- reserved-test
prefix `10.5555`, resolving only through this site. The artwork itself has
exactly one real, citable identifier, and this is the anchor that makes the
piece a genuine work rather than one more fabricated proxy: it is archived on
Zenodo with a permanent DOI.

The DOI [`10.5281/zenodo.21199776`](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21199776) is
a _concept_ DOI: it always resolves to the latest archived version, so a
citation stays current as the living work gains new releases. Cite it as:

> Swift, B. (2026). _Slop University_ [Software].

A machine-readable
[`CITATION.cff`](https://github.com/benswift/slop-university/blob/main/CITATION.cff)
in the repository generates the equivalent BibTeX or other formats, and the
Zenodo record exports them directly.
